Brentwood School Dress Code for Division Two Students

The way that staff and students dress has an impact on the tone of the school; therefore, all are expected to dress appropriately for their particular roles and in a way that shows respect for themselves, others and the school. By the time students reach grade four they begin to take on the responsibility of choosing what they wear and determining how they want to look. As they do, they need to be aware that different situations require different standards. For example, what a student might wear when hanging out with friends on a Saturday at the swimming pool may not be appropriate to wear to school, to church, or on other occasions.

Our standard of dress and appearance marks our school as a place of respect and minimizes distractions to learning. This does not mean that clothes must be “dressy”. Casual clothing in which students feel comfortable for various learning activities such as outdoor science projects or art assignments is acceptable.

The dress code is in effect throughout the building on school days during school hours. Our dress code has been developed by school administration in consultation with the parent council and school staff. Violation of the dress code could result in the student being sent home to change. Exceptions may be made for special school occasions during evenings, weekends and on specific school dress days.
It is our goal to maintain a learning environment that is positive, respectful, and appropriate for the age of our students. Therefore we follow a dress code that addresses the following areas.

Hygiene- Students are expected to have good hygiene. As they grow older this usually involves more frequent showers, wearing deodorant if necessary, and washing clothes (and gym strip) often.

Weather appropriate- Our students are expected to go outside for recess and lunch hour breaks and for some physical education classes. As such, they are expected to come to school dressed for the weather. During winter months, coats, hats, gloves, and boots are compulsory to ensure student safety when outside. Snow pants on exceptionally cold days are recommended.

Age appropriate attire- The majority of our students are twelve years of age and under. We expect that they will dress in an age appropriate way using the following guidelines:

• Bare midriffs are unacceptable. There should be no skin visible between upper and lower garments while standing or sitting. This rules out very low rise pants/skirts/shorts and short tops. Skirts should be no shorter than fingertip length when the arms are extended down alongside the body.

• Items that are revealing or provocative are unacceptable. Sleeveless tops are acceptable but must not be low cut. No halter tops or spaghetti strap tops for girls.

• Undergarments must not be exposed at any times, standing, bending, or sitting, including underwear and bra straps.

• Shorts and beach sandals may be worn only in appropriate weather during the spring and fall.

• T-shirts with offensive images or sayings or with alcohol, tobacco or other drug advertisements may not be worn.

• Gym strip is required for grade 5 and 6 gym classes. (T-shirt, shorts or sweat pants, non-marking running shoes) It is recommended that students bring deodorant to school to use after strenuous activity. Gym strip should be washed weekly.

• Pajama-type pants or slippers are not permitted.

• Bare feet or socks without shoes are not permitted.

• Outdoor clothing (parkas, jackets, mitts, etc.) must not be worn in instructional areas. Hats, toques or bandannas must not be worn indoors (males and females). All students are expected to remove their hats and outdoor footwear upon entering the school. Exceptions may be made for students who wear caps or other head coverings because of their religious beliefs, or students who must wear such items for medical or health reasons.

• Any clothing or accessories that have the potential to cause harm to self or others during school activities are not allowed. (e.g. long chains, dog collars, spiked wrist bands, etc).

• Excessive or distracting makeup is not permitted.
